Portia Cook began attending classes at Colorado State University when she was five years old – with her grandmother. That experience led her back to campus after struggling to overcome generational poverty and addiction. Cook credits her CSU Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship – funded by proceeds from the CSU license plate program – for helping her achieve her dreams.
Darshan Shah (B.S., ’92; M.EE., ’01) has had extraordinary success in his career. In addition, starting as a student and continuing as an alumnus, he has played a central role in making CSU a more welcoming place for international students as well as participated in other CSU initiatives.

After graduating from Fort Collins High School in 2004, Priscilla Duron’s (B.A., ’19) life was lacking any meaningful direction. She was working three part-time jobs and there was little, if any possibility, to pursue a four-year degree. But that all changed one afternoon.
One does not expect inspirational encounters in an airport, but that is exactly what happened to Marty Lenz (B.A., ’90) on a Friday morning in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He spotted Temple Grandin, CSU professor of animal science and world-renown expert in animal welfare and autism, walking through the concourse.
The Colorado State University Alumni Association kicked off Homecoming and Family Weekend by honoring the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients.
The Larry LaSasso Spirit Award has been presented annually since 1983 to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary spirit and support for CSU Athletics. The 2021 recipient is Joel Cantalamessa (B.A., ’95), who also received the CSU Alumni Association’s Graduate of the Last Decade Award in 2007.
