1950s
Georgina LaBerge (B.S., ’58) won two gold medals in power walking at the Huntsman World Games in St. George, Utah, in October 2022 and one gold medal at the Bay Area Senior Games in San Mateo, California, last April. Since taking up power walking ten years ago, she has won 14 gold medals. She is a former mayor of Redwood City, California, and recipient of several awards for community service. She also serves on the nonprofit boards CityTrees and Sustainable San Mateo County.
1960s
Kathleen (Kathy) Miranda (B.S., ’65) and her husband, Steve, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a luau in Colorado Springs. People attended from Hawai’i, Washington State, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Wyoming, and Colorado. They have 4 children, 7 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Miranda retired in 1998 from personnel management at Ft. Carson, Colorado. Her husband retired in 1990 from the Colorado Springs Police Department and held several other positions after.
Stephen La Dochy (M.S., ’69) submitted the book, Fire and Rain: California’s Changing Weather and Climate, to Springer Nature, January 20. He co-authored the book with Mike Witiw, and it will be published October 2023.
1970s
Frank Kelly (B.S., ’72) taught math for 30 years and will be retired 21 years this June.
Monte Watson (B.S., ’72) and his wife, Linda, welcomed their only grandson, Leo Paul Jensen, son of Rebecca and Sean Jensen, December 28, 2021. As a retired occupational therapist, grandpa, and weekly babysitter, Watson studies and fosters Leo’s amazing development. He may be a future RAM.
1980s
McCoy Smith (B.S., ’84) wrote two chapters on the intersection of copyright law and patent law and free and open-source intellectual property licensing in the recent Oxford University Press publication, Open Source Law, Policy and Practice (Amanda Brock, et al.). He lectures around the world on these topics, including a presentation in 2015 at the Colorado State University Department of Engineering’s Professional Learning Institute. McCoy is the Founding Attorney at Lex Pan Law LLC, a full-service intellectual property law firm.
Dayna Ashley-Oehm (B.A., ’88) and the Aurora Housing Authority completed construction of new, affordable housing specifically designed for senior veterans. Liberty View Apartments is located on the former Fitzsimmons Army Base in Aurora. The property has 59 spacious housing units, common areas, and exterior social spaces. The grand opening was celebrated on May 3, and Congressman Jason Crow and Mayor Mike Coffman were featured speakers. A public art installation is in the works, and an exterior sculpture will be placed on site by Veterans Day 2023.
Carson Walker (B.A., ’89) was hired as the first CEO of South Dakota News Watch, a nonprofit news organization that produces in-depth journalism for its media partners and readers. Walker worked in radio while attending Colorado State University and was previously a multi-platform reporter, photographer, and editor in television, newspaper, and at The Associated Press.
1990s
Prof. Mohamed Rami (Ph.D. ’95) studied Water Resources Planning and Management and specializes in the application and development of mathematical models for management, evaluation, and analyses of complex environmental, hydrologic and agricultural systems. Over the last decade, he worked as Assistant Minister for Research & Technology & Director of Environment, Climate Changes Research Institute (ECRI). He is a certified engineer in irrigation and drainage, environment impact assessments, and remote sensing.
Over 30 years, he received 8 awards from international and national organizations that include ICID, and American Geophysical Union. He has worked as a consultant with many international organizations, including UNDP, USAID, IRG, EMWIS, World Bank, and CIDA.
Shoshana Shamberg (B.S., ’98) authored a textbook chapter for rehab professionals.
2010s
Whitney Crutchfield (M.F.A., ’10) just got a tenure-track job in textile development and marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
Dr. Maryhen Arrieta (Ph.D., ’15) has fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a dentist. She can now provide quality dental care to those in need. Her love for helping people have a healthy smile, especially children, inspired her to pursue this career. Dr. Arrieta is grateful for the education and opportunities that have allowed her to make a positive impact in her community.
